On Thursday we started looking at all the little details that needed to be figured out before the first trip arrived on Saturday. I really enjoyed this part of my job because I love working on things like puzzles and trying to get all the times and different details to fit together perfectly was like one big puzzle. I also enjoyed having to problem solve and come up with out of the box ideas to fit into this big "puzzle"
After we finished working out those details, we spent that night hiking the Butte. The butte is a small mountain that goes up about 2000 feet in elevation to the top. On our way to the top of the Butte we met a friend, a giant bull moose. Mr. Moose was standing on the trail grazing so we could not continue on the hike, so instead we had to bushwhack through the tail grass around him until we were at a safe distance to get back on the trail. Once we got to the top, looking out at all the beauty surrounding us for this new perspective was amazing. After we made our way back down to the bottom and back to the house, three of us staff ended up in the kitchen at midnight eating cereal. During this funny bonding time we talked about our rose, thorn, and unicorns of the day. A rose is something that was good about the day, a thorn is something bad that happened that day, and a unicorn is something weird or interesting that happened.
The next day I became the handy man I did not know existed within me. I put up a screen door on our glass porch door so we could open it to get air without having a tone of bugs fly in, I refilled our van Big Red with AC and took it out to wash it, and I put up a towel rack in the bathroom. I was also blessed with the opportunity to watch over our director's dog while she was down in Anchorage and I had so much fun with Snickers during that time. I really can not wait until I get to have a couple of my own dogs in the future. I finished off the day in a scramble of phone calls to get some final things done but by the end of the night we had all the car situations for the next week figured out and had all the food for the next week figured out. I encourage you to take some time at the end of your day and look back at everything that went on and think about your own rose, thorn, and unicorns so you process everything that went on and get yourself ready for the next day.
Braden, Thanks for inviting me to your blog - we just got back from 16 days in Alaska - it is an amazing state!
